During a meeting of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National Council, Hussain Hassan—a council member and Chairperson of the Media Committee—delivered a scathing critique of the current administration. He urgently called for “direct action,” asserting that the country’s independent institutions have lost their autonomy and that the essential system of checks and balances has completely collapsed under the present government.
Hassan highlighted a deepening economic crisis, noting that the nation is falling into a financial abyss.
He criticized the government’s perceived inaction regarding the rising value of the dollar and its failure to implement measures to improve the general living standards of the public. According to Hassan, there is no visible effort from the administration to mitigate these pressing economic challenges.
A significant portion of his address focused on the erosion of media freedom. Hassan alleged that the government has used substantial financial influence to silence local media outlets. He claimed that this “muzzling” has prevented the voices of the opposition and the genuine concerns of the citizens from being reported.
Because of this perceived media blackout, he argued that the only remaining path for the opposition is to engage in street-level activities to reach the public directly.
Furthermore, Hassan raised alarms regarding the upcoming Local Council Elections, accusing the government of exerting undue influence over the process. He suggested that the Elections Commission is showing bias, which compromises the integrity of the vote.
He concluded by stating there are numerous reasons for the public to voice their disapproval of the government’s conduct. He urged MDP members and the general public to organize into groups, take to the streets of Malé, and raise their voices to increase awareness about the government’s alleged negligence.
