MEEMU ATOLL, RAABANDHIHURAA – A major social media campaign has been launched to rescue a small, vulnerable kitten found stranded and alone on the uninhabited island of Raabandhihuraa in Meemu Atoll.
The kitten was discovered by passengers on a safari boat traveling south from Malé, leading many to believe the animal may have been intentionally abandoned on the remote island.
Messila Macdevit, who first shared the heart-wrenching story on Facebook, reported that as soon as the group stepped onto the shore, the tiny kitten approached them, displaying immense affection and refusing to leave their side.
“The kitten appeared to be in good health and was incredibly friendly; it stayed right with us the whole time,” she wrote. While the group was able to provide the animal with much-needed food and water, they were devastated to learn that boat regulations strictly prohibited them from bringing the kitten aboard the safari vessel.
As it stands, the kitten remains isolated on the tiny desert island, where access to fresh water and sustainable food sources is virtually non-existent. Macdevit has issued an emotional plea to any vessels traveling through the Meemu Atoll or residents of nearby inhabited islands to stop and retrieve the animal.
To incentivize the rescue, she has announced a cash reward for anyone who can successfully transport the kitten to a populated island where it can be properly cared for. Local boating communities and safari operators in the area are being urged to keep a lookout for the kitten to ensure this small life is saved before it’s too late.
