Male’ Maldives: The Maldivian government has issued a firm challenge to former President Mohamed Nasheed following his public declaration that the administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu would be legally overturned before the end of 2026. Speaking at a campaign event in Addu City for parliamentary candidate Abdulla Sadiq, Nasheed asserted that his plans were serious, claiming that a significant number of lawmakers within the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) are deeply dissatisfied with current government policies and are prepared to sign a no-confidence motion against the president. Nasheed assured supporters that his signature would be the first on the resolution, hinting at covert political maneuvers within the parliament that would soon expose cracks in the ruling coalition and deliver a major shock to the government.
In response to these bold statements, Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundu) dismissed Nasheed’s claims during a press conference, challenging him to go ahead with his plans if he truly believes he has the political leverage. Shareef noted that there are roughly six months remaining in the year and invited journalists to watch closely to see if Nasheed could actually deliver on his promise. He added that if the government remains unchanged by January of next year, the media should hold Nasheed accountable and question him regarding his failed prediction at the very first press conference of 2027.
