Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has announced that his primary objective is to reach a milestone of 100,000 members for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) without losing any of its current members. He shared this target in a video posted to social media platform X, tying the goal to his upcoming campaign for the party’s chairperson election. Nasheed emphasized that he does not want a single member to leave and intends to launch special initiatives during and after the election to heavily boost party enrollment.
This ambitious target marks a definitive stance for Nasheed, who previously left the MDP to establish a new political faction called “The Democrats.” He now underscores his commitment to the MDP, stating that he does not want anyone leaving the party under any circumstances. According to the latest statistics from the Elections Commission, the MDP currently has 43,784 registered members, trailing behind the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), which leads the Maldives with 74,048 members.
Despite Nasheed’s push to drastically expand the opposition party’s base, internal friction has heightened ahead of the internal vote. Remarks made by Nasheed indicating that the losing factions of the chairperson election should stay away from executive matters, and that leadership roles should remain exclusively with the winners, have sparked intense debate and division among party members.
