In a formal communication to the United Nations, Iran has warned that the strategic military base of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean will be considered a “legitimate target” for a powerful retaliatory strike should the United States initiate any acts of aggression against the Islamic Republic.

Tehran framed this warning as an assertion of its right to self-defense, alleging that American military installations in the region are being utilized to conduct activities that pose a direct threat to Iranian national security.
As one of the most critical hubs for U.S. military operations across the Middle East and Asia, Diego Garcia occupies a pivotal role in global defense logistics.

Iran’s letter to the UN emphasized that if American aircraft or military assets are deployed to attack Iranian territory, they will respond decisively regardless of the geographical origin of the strike. Furthermore, the Iranian government warned that any entity or nation that violates its sovereignty will face “bitter consequences.”

This diplomatic move aims to draw international attention to the potential risks posed by U.S. actions during a period of escalating regional instability.

With tensions between the two nations reaching a critical point amid broader Middle Eastern conflicts, geopolitical analysts view the explicit threat against a remote and vital facility like Diego Garcia as a major challenge to regional security and a significant escalation in military rhetoric.
